Child Labour

This edition of Global Issues focuses on the topic of child labour. Around 250 million child labourers around the globe experience long hours, cramped conditions, little pay and restricted access to schooling. For many there is not much prospect for the future. It’s not a pretty picture, but it’s not without hope either. Our take action section includes practical suggestions for young Kiwi workers who may be experiencing problems at work, and suggestions about how to help others. Child labour is about rights, and about being able to get a balance between work, school and leisure.

In this edition of Global Issues we look at what climate change is, and how it may impact on the way we live our lives in the future. Climate change is a weighty issue with many implications, but there are opportunities for positive change.

Water is essential to life - but is access to it our right? People are totally dependent on having access to clean water; so what happens when water dries up? Or becomes too dirty to drink? Or there just isn't enough of it to go around? What would we do if water wasn't freely available to us, and we had to pay for each drop that we used? Why do we have governments? Plato said that people, "chafe impatiently at the least touch of authority," but become lawless and insecure when given unlimited freedom. So, probably in part because we behave badly if we get to do whatever we want, and despite getting annoyed if others try to tell us what to do, ever since prehistoric times we've made rules and chosen leaders.
